As a result of the recommendations made by the ARSP, the Govt. of India appointed a high level Diaspora Committee witht the Late Shri L.M. Singhvi as Chairman and Shri Baleshwar Agarwal, Shri R.L. Bhatia, Shri J.C. Hiremath, as members and Shri J.C. Sharma, I.F.S. as Member-Secretary to study the multifarious issues concerning the people of Indian origin.
The committee after extensive tours all over the world serious deliberations and, presented a 600 pages report to the Prime Minister of India in January 2002.
The successive Goverments started implementing the recommendations. The first one was to celebrate a ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’ (PBD) on 9th January- the day of Mahatma Gandhi, arrival in India from South Africa in 1915. Since 2003 the PBD is being celebrated each year. Some eminent persons of Indian origin are recognised with awards.
A separate Ministry for overseas Indians is already in place. A separate university for the children of the overseas Indian is being setup.
